Polaris Duo (saxophone and harp)
Middlewich and District Concert Society
For the first concert of 2020 the Middlewich and District Concerts Society is delighted to welcome the Polaris Duo - Gillian Blair (saxophone) and Elinor Nicholson (harp). They formed the duo in 2011 whilst studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. This is not an obvious combination of instruments, but they have shown the talent and flair to make it work. Indeed, they were chosen to give the world premiere of Andy Scott's Sonata for Saxophone and Harp at the World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, and this will be one of the pieces in the programme.
In addition to working with contemporary composers they are dedicated to expanding the music for these instruments by arranging existing works. So their programme ranges from a sonata by CPE Bach to the sonata by Andy Scott already mentioned. There are also a Fantaisie by Saint-Saens, Lenski's Aria from "Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky, a Nottorno by Bumcke, "Green" by Barbara Thompson and "What is joy to you?" by Esther Swift. The Aria was performed on flute and piano at the previous concert, so this will make an interesting contrast in sounds and interpretation.
The concert will be held in the Drama Studio of Middlewich High School, King Edward Street / St. Anne's Walk, Middlewich, (CW10 9BE), on Saturday 18th January, 2020 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are £10 (concessions) and will be available at the door.
