Verdi Requiem

Oldham Choral Society

Verdi Requiem

This wonderful work was the culmination of many years thought and preparation.  Blazing trumpets, thunderous drums and a grand chorus summon forth the power and emotion of Verdi’s choral masterpiece. It was composed as a tribute to the writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni and was first performed on May 22nd 1874 on the anniversary of his death. Johannes Brahms described it as “a work of genius,” and the requiem features dramatic melodies to express profound loss, fear and ultimately hope and joy. The whole work is very much in the Verdi operatic tradition – dramatic, emotional and reflective with great tunes and exquisite orchestration.

We will be joined by a first-class team of professional soloists:

Linda Richardson, Kathleen Wilkinson, David Butt Philip. Thomas D Hopkinson
