Tippett: A Child of our Time
Beethoven: Violin concerto

Although written in 1939-41, A Child of our Time could not be more relevant to today’s world in its themes of persecution, scapegoating, flight and statelessness. It was inspired by Tippett’s outrage at the Nazi persecution of the Jews but its message is universal, as echoed by its inclusion of five famous African-American spirituals born of black slavery.
The powerful music of A Child of our Time delivers its message with a diversity of musical styles and moods, from chilly bleakness and stark anger to quiet contemplation, longing belief and, eventually, tentative hope. After its first performance, it was soon recognised as one of the major choral works of the twentieth century and since then has also been one of the most performed.
We welcome as our soloists Abigail Iveson (soprano), Olivia Ray (mezzo soprano), Philip Sheffield (tenor), Alan Fairs (baritone) and Charles Sewart (violin). We are also joined by the Orchestra of Stowe Opera, and are conducted by Robert Secret, Music Director of Oxford Harmonic Choir.

Tippett: A Child of our Time and Beethoven: Violin concerto will be performed at 7.30pm on Saturday 25 March 2017 in Oxford Town Hall.
