South Birmingham Sinfonia: Ravel, Strauss, Shostakovich
South Birmingham Sinfonia
South Birmingham Sinfonia's winter concert presents music composed by Dmitri Shostakovich, Richard Strauss, and Maurice Ravel. Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin is both a delicate homage to Couperin's courtly formal dances and a memorial to friends he lost in the 1914-18 war. Richard Strauss composed his first concerto for the French horn, his musician father's instrument, at only 18 years old. Shostakovich's 5th Symphony in D minor followed Soviet condemnation of his opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtensk" as "muddle not music" and was received as an artist's "response to just criticism" - a response that is sarcastic, despairing, grieving, beautiful, terrified and altogether magnificent.
