Thames Philharmonic Choir - Monteverdi Vespers

Thames Philharmonic Choir

Thames Philharmonic Choir will return to Cadogan Hall to perform Claudio Monteverdi’s monumental Vespers of 1610. Conducting the work will be rising star Harry Bradford, appointed Music Director in 2019, making his much-delayed debut at the Hall. The Choir will be accompanied by leading proponents of early music, His Majesty's Sagbutts and Cornetts.

The Vespers is one of the most prolific and demanding major choral works of the early 17th Century. It clearly demonstrates Monteverdi’s wonderfully versatile musical palette, which includes intricate polychoral textures, glorious instrumental flourishes and sumptuous solo movements. Having been unhappy in his court position in Mantua, the Vespers are often seen as Monteverdi’s ‘calling card’ for the prestigious position as Maestro di Capella at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice and represents one of the main markers of his move away from the prima pratica style of the renaissance to the seconda pratica of the early Baroque movement.
