Chilcott's St John Passion
Valentine Singers
Bob Chilcott’s setting of the Passion tells the story of Christ's trial and Crucifixion using the text from St John's Gospel. The drama is narrated by the evangelist with soloists and chorus taking the parts of the various characters and groups. The story is concisely told and is punctuated by four beautiful meditations, featuring a soprano soloist. Chilcott says: “The texts are taken from English poems from the thirteenth to the early seventeenth centuries that express deeply human responses to death, to life, and to man's relationship with the world and with God.” There are also five beautiful new settings of well-known Passiontide hymn texts for audience participation.
