Come and Sing "George Shearing"
Winchester Philharmonic Choir
This year's theme is settings from Shakespeare, with works written 300 years apart, “Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare” by Shearing (1999) and selected choruses from Purcell’s opera The Fairy Queen (1692) based on “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
“Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare” is a collection of pieces by the blind jazz pianist, George Shearing, consisting of seven settings, some a cappella, some with piano and string bass. They are fresh, exciting, and very accessible and give us the opportunity to perform works outside of our usual repertoire as do the Purcell choruses.
