Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem
York Musical Society
Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, Vaughan Williams’s Toward the Unknown Region, conducted by David Pipe and Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs conducted by Richard Shephard.
Brahms’s German Requiem has a unique place in the history of York Musical Society (YMS). During World War One, and in the face of critical punlic opinion, YMS continued to sing this piece with the original German lyrics. This warm, passionate and profoundly moving piece is very different in character from the traditional settings of the Latin Mass. The selected Biblical texts omit specific Christian references as Brahms wanted humanity to be the central focus.
Toward the Unknown Region is one of the most outstanding successes in Vaughan Williams’s early career. The composer called it a ‘song’ for chorus and orchestra, and was influenced by Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens.
Four Last Songs was Strauss's final work. With rich orchestration and beautiful soaring vocal lines, they are known to many as his last will and testament.
We are pleased to welcome singers from the Münster Philharmonischer Chor for this concert.
