CoMA celebrates 30 years of participatory music!

Join CoMA for a weekend celebration of community and new music as well as its 30th anniversary on 15 and 16 July at St John's Smith Square in London.

Contemporary Music for All (CoMA) since 1993 has supported and provided the opportunities for leisure-time musicians to participate in contemporary music. Their philosophy is that contemporary music should be accessible and open to everyone of all music-making abilities and backgrounds, ‘celebrating participation in new music-making as a meaningful and essential part of our lives.’

Since then, it has established regionals ensembles across the UK of string, percussion, woodwind, brass and piano. CoMA’s mission is to foster environments where leisure-time and community music making can thrive and shares its resources widely across the sector providing workshops, residencies and a music library of more than a 1,000 works.

This year, CoMA celebrates 30 years of inspiring new music making across the UK and globally, having championed more than 1,500 composers, sound creators, amateur and professional musicians. To mark the occasion, the organisation invites members to a special weekend on 15 and 16 July, 2023 at St John’s Smith Square in London.

Expect a weekend of workshops, discussions, an exhibition exploring the history of CoMA and some amazing performances from CoMA resident ensembles. The weekend will also commemorate the recent retirement of CoMA’s founder and director Chris Shurety and honour his long-standing legacy.

CoMA are a long-standing Making Music member group. They provide opportunities for leisure-time musicians to take part in the creation and performance of contemporary music through a network of vocal and instrumental new music ensembles, supported by a contemporary music library, composer workshops, summer and winter music schools and an international biennial contemporary music festival.
