Dunfermline Junior Chorus celebrate their 20th anniversary
Dianne Slaven, member of the Dunfermline Junior Chorus committee, talks to us about how her group celebrated their 20th anniversary.
Dunfermline Junior Chorus (DJC) has celebrated its 20th anniversary in style, rounding the year off in fine voice with a spectacular concert.
It doesn't seem like two decades since the choir was founded by our Artistic Director, Mandy Miller. Now comprising four choirs, and around 100 singers aged 6 to 18, DJC has gone from strength to strength. Over the years, it has not only fostered a love of music but has also developed friendships and teamwork within the groups, encouraged self-expression and built self-confidence in the youngsters who have been part of the DJC family. Throughout the 20 years our singers have always shown great commitment and have given their best - we are incredibly proud of them all.
To mark this special anniversary year all our singers received a commemorative badge, some ordered colourful hoodies with DJC logo, we had a fun pizza party and a fantastic 20th birthday cake! We also had a special souvenir programme printed for our anniversary concert and every choir member received a copy.
One highlight of the anniversary concert was the Alumni Choir. Nearly 40 former members, including many founder members, came along to perform in the concert. They travelled from all over the UK to be part of this memorable event and come home to their choir family. From the smallest Wee Music Maker to the most senior singers, all choirs gave us a celebration of music-making.
The programme started with We Are Free, which was performed in our first concert all those years ago. The capacity audience was treated to a wonderful selection of music from all the choirs led by Mandy Miller and Alison Baxter. There were many emotional moments. The concert finished with a wonderful performance of Uma Familia. That's what Dunfermline Junior Chorus is - one big family.
Miss Miller was presented with a photo book covering the first 20 years. It is full of pictures of the choirs and beautiful quotes from graduating seniors over the years.
We now look to the next decade. Dunfermline Junior Chorus continues to provide a safe, fun and welcoming environment where children and young people can experience musical and personal excellence as they make music together.
Come and join us for our 21st season!
