The main item in the first half of the concert is a mini-musical by John Rutter entitled ‘The Reluctant Dragon.’ It is the story of St George and The Dragon – with a twist! The dragon is reluctant to fight, preferring instead a life of peace and poetry. It is an allegory about prejudice and reconciliation. The animal theme begun by the dragon is stretched throughout the concert in Christmas music both little and well-known, by Bob Chilcott, William Matthias, Eric Whitacre, Peter Warlock, Michael Head and others. We are joined by children from Staveley Primary School, including Jessica Walling in a solo role.
