Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius
Exeter Festival Chorus
The Exeter Festival Chorus 30th anniversary concert takes place in the magnificent setting of Exeter Cathedral, directed by Andrea Brown.
Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, widely regarded as his choral masterpiece, is a large and powerful work. It is a statement of faith and wonder that tells the story of a dying man whose soul is guided by an angel towards heaven, where he is about to witness wonders beyond any human imagination.
‘This is the best of me’, the composer wrote on his manuscript score, and the searing burst of musical emotion as Gerontius looks into the loving eyes of his God bears that out in a truly dramatic way.
We are delighted to be joined by Southern Sinfonia; our German partner choirs Hanauer Kantorei and Bachchor, Bad Homburg; and Exeter Cathedral Youth and Junior Choir.
Featuring renowned soloists:
Daniel Norman (tenor) - Gerontius
Jess Dandy (mezzo-soprano) - Angel
Alex Ashworth (baritone) - Priest/Angel of the Agony
with Peter Adcock - chamber organ
