In Dulci Jubilo
Leeds Guild Of Singers
A Christmas concert featuring seasonal choral favourites and less well-known works. Come and listen to one of the finest chamber choirs in Leeds in the intimate setting of this Norman village church. Join us for mulled wine and mince pies after the concert.
Our Musical Director, Benjamin Kirk, has put together an delightful selection of works from the Christmas choral repertoire, which we think will warm your heart on a cold December afternoon. We just couldn’t let the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams go by without performing his much-loved “Fantasia on Christmas Carols”. It’s a hearty piece for choir, baritone solo and organ that will be a fitting concert opener.
We will contrast rousing works like “Hodie Christus Natus Est” by Poulenc and the modern “Nova! Nova!” by Chilcott, with more tranquil pieces like “The Lamb” by Tavener and “Sing Lullaby” by Howells. You’ll enjoy music from the wide range of musical eras that you’ve come to expect from LGS – from the early music of Victoria and Lassus to the contemporary sounds of Whitacre and Lauridsen via the uplifting "In Dulci Jubilo" by Pearsall. And more besides!
The concert venue is worth visiting in itself: St John’s Church lies in a charming semi-rural location on the edge of Adel village. Described as “one of the best and most complete Norman churches in Yorkshire”, it has a magnificent south doorway and the choir will sing under the carved Norman chancel arch.
We look forward to sharing the musical joy of Christmas with you!
