An Atlantic Voyage

Ayr Choral Union

Ayr Choral’s next concert takes place on Sunday October 30th in Ayr Town Hall at 7.30 pm. “An Atlantic Voyage” explores a wide range of choral music from both North and South America, and from Scotland. From the enchanting renaissance music of De Padilla who sailed from Spain to Mexico in the 16th century, Morten Lauridsen’s “Nocturnes”, to Robert Burns and “Red Red Rose” set simply to music by the American James Mulholland, there are many choral gems as well as geographical links in this exciting programme. The ethereal spiritual “Shall we gather by the River” composed by the American Sarah Rimkus (who studied at Aberdeen University) is followed by Sir James MacMillan’s moving “Lassie, wad ye loe me” in broad Scots. Ken Johnston’s sequence of familiar songs about Bonny Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion – “I Landed with Seven Men” takes us from the exuberant “Wi A Hundred Pipers” and “Johnnie Cope” to the sadness of “Will ye no come back again – when many Scots eventually fled across the Atlantic to America.

We are delighted to have Stuart McKinlay as narrator to tell the Jacobite story between the songs. Claire Haslin will accompany the choir, and Andrew Mc Taggart will conduct us and keep us on track on our musical Atlantic Voyages.

Tickets are available now from members, on Ayr Choral website – www.ayrchoralunion.net – and from the Gaiety Theatre box office.
