The MITHRAS PIANO TRIO
Horsham Music Circle
We were greatly impressed with the recital by pianist Dominic Degavino earlier this year with glowing comments from the review ‘an immaculate sureness of touch … absolute mastery of the keyboard’. Supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust he is joined by Ionel Manciu, violin and Leo Popplewell, cello, the three coming together in 2017 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Praised for their ‘exquisite phrasing’, ‘full-blooded commitment’ and ‘bold, passionate colours’, the Mithras Trio is fast growing a reputation as one of the next generation’s most exciting piano trios. As well as regular tuition with Matthew Jones, Carole Presland and Ursula Smith, they have performed in masterclasses to the Takács, Danish and Emerson Quartets, and have had residencies in Snape Maltings and at the Schulich School of Music, Montréal.
They are currently members of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme, broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 3, and have won numerous first prizes in prestigious chamber music competitions including the 10th Trondheim International, Cavatina Intercollegiate and St. James. In 2019 they were recipients of the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Award.
They offer us a a splendid programme - the Phantasie Piano Trio by Bridge, Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D Major ‘Ghost’, Boulanger’s D’un soir triste and D’un matin de printemps, and Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor.
