Come and Sing Jenkins The Armed Man

Belfast Philharmonic Society

Join members of Belfast Philharmonic Choir, conductor Dr Lynsey Callaghan, and accompanist Gail Evans, to learn Jenkins’ beautiful contemporary mass, The Armed Man.

The Armed Man has been a popular request for the Philharmonic’s annual Come and Sing, and we are delighted to be able to bring singers together to learn it as our first in-person Come and Sing since February 2020.

In the warm acoustic of Fisherwick Church, you will be led through the piece, which combines the Ordinary of the Mass with extracts from sacred and secular works including Tennyson’s Ring out, Wild Bells and the Mahabharata. The mass ties together texts showing the peril of war and calling for peace, in a moving epic which has become a favourite of both professional and amateur singers. The day is open to singers of all ages and experience who would like to learn choral music in a fun and welcoming atmosphere, with the professional instruction of Dr Lynsey Callaghan. Lynsey is the Artistic Director of Belfast Philharmonic Youth Choirs, Music Director of Tallaght Choral Society, and founder and Artistic Director of Dublin Youth Choir.

At the end of the day, the whole group will join together to perform a short concert, with soloists drawn from Belfast Philharmonic Choir. Singers are always surprised how much they can learn in just one day, and the event is a highlight of the Philharmonic season. We are especially glad to be learning music together with new singers after such a long break – make sure to book your tickets as soon as possible!
