An exciting programme of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music for violin and chamber organ, with an emphasis on music by female composers: the Italian nun Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704), the French harpsichordist Élizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1665-1729) and the contemporary British composer Rachel Stott; she was one of our helpers at the last festival. There will also be music by Heinrich Biber (The Annunciation from the ‘Rosary Sonatas’), Handel (William Babell’s highly ornamented keyboard arrangement of ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’) and J.S. Bach (the fine Sonata in E minor BWV 1023). We have long wanted to bring Catherine Martin to SVF; she is one of the most distinguished British Baroque violinists, currently the leader of the Gabrieli Consort and Players and other leading Baroque groups. Jan Waterfield is the principal harpsichordist of the Gabrieli Consort and Players and plays regularly with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Dunedin Consort.
