Rossini: Petite Messe Solennelle
York Musical Society
York Musical Society is very much looking forward to performing together again as a full choir in the Memorial Hall at St. Peter's. The choir will be conducted by David Pipe and accompanied by Caius Lee (piano) and Valerie Barr (accordion), with soloists Katie Wood, Emily Hodkinson, Ed Lambert and Stuart O'Hara.
‘Dear Lord’, Rossini prayed, after finishing this, his last major composition, ‘here it is finished, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music, or rather, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa, as you well know. Not much technique, a little bit of heart, that's all. Blessings to you and grant me Paradise.’
The Petite Messe Solennelle is full of memorable colour and drama, ranging from hushed intensity to boisterous high spirits.
