Music from Scandinavia
Nottingham Symphony Orchestra
Nottingham Symphony Orchestra’s fantastic 2019-2020 season continues on Saturday, March 7 at the city’s Albert Hall with performances of two much-loved classics and an attractive work rarely performed in this country.
Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor is one of the most popular works of its type in the repertoire. It is packed with memorable moments and melodies and, of course, the opening will be familiar to anyone who has seen the famous Morecambe and Wise sketch.
For this performance, NSO will be joined again by soloist Beate Toyka. Based in Derbyshire, Beate is an in-demand performer and her last appearance with the orchestra was an electrifying account of Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto.
The Fifth Symphony by Jean Sibelius is among the Finnish master’s most beloved compositions. From simple beginnings, the symphony builds into a glorious finale inspired by the sight and sounds of swans flying past the composer’s house in rural Finland.
The other piece in the concert is Midvinter by Wilhelm Stenhammar, a tuneful rhapsody based on a series of Swedish folk tunes that sits very comfortably alongside the music of the other two composers in this concert. Don’t miss a rare chance to hear this lovely work.
General admission £16, concessions £14, £5 for under-18s and full-time students
