Dolby and Hughes Piano Duo

Middlewich and District Concert Society

For the opening concert of the 30th season the Middlewich and District Concerts Society is delighted to welcome back the Dolby and Hughes Piano Duo (Wendy Nugent and Tony Hughes). It takes little imagination to be captivated by the sight of four hands at one piano and the great potential for entanglement! That it never seems to happen is a great tribute to the skills of the musicians.

Wendy and Tony met whilst accompanying talented young musicians on behalf of South Cheshire Young Musicians. The first piece they ever tried together was one of Bizet’s Jeux d’Enfants and it was instantly apparent that there was that ‘special something’ that all duo partners need. A spirit of fun fuels their music. “We don’t often do much ‘serious’ repertoire” Tony says. “Somehow it doesn’t look quite right, two people sitting elbow to elbow, crossing arms, getting in each other’s way, and trying to be solemn.” This shows in their choice of works, which leans towards the more popular side of the repertoire.

Their programme is quite ambitious, with music by Bernstein, Mozart, Ligeti and Khachaturian, and including Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suite and Carmen Fantasy. Another exciting and entertaining evening of music making!

The concert will be held in the Drama Studio of Middlewich High School,  King Edward Street / St. Anne's Walk, Middlewich, (CW10 9BE), on Saturday 12th October, 2019 at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are £10 (concessions) and will be available at the door.
