Sounds of the Sea

Harpenden Choral Society

Harpenden and Stevenage Choral Societies join forces on Saturday 25 March 2017 at 7:30 pm in the Coptic Orthodox Church Centre, Stevenage to perform two of the best known musical evocations of the sea - Vaughan Williams’s exhilarating setting of Walt Whitman’s poetry, A Sea Symphony, and Benjamin Britten’s orchestral suite, Sea Interludes, from his opera Peter Grimes. As Vaughan Williams's first symphony, A Sea Symphony is an ambitiously large work, and remains the best known of the many sea-related compositions written at the turn of the 20th century, standing firmly in the canon of great choral orchestral masterpieces.

This performance features the Kings Sinfonietta and soloists soprano Sally Silver and baritone Grant Doyle, the concert will be conducted by John Andrews and Robin Osterley.
