Haydn: The Creation

Amersham and Chesham Bois Choral Society

This splendid work is Haydn’s musical interpretation
of the creation of the world, inspired by the Bible’s
book of Genesis, the Book of Psalms, and Milton’s
Paradise Lost. This oratorio, considered by many
to be Haydn’s greatest work, was written in 1797-8,
and first performed publicly in Vienna in 1799. It
was scored for three soloists, soprano, tenor and
bass, with a full choir and orchestra. The soloists
perform the parts of angels in parts 1 and 2, then
those of Adam and Eve in part 3. The choral
singers are employed in a series of monumental
choruses, several of them celebrating the end of
one particular day of creation.
This is a thrilling work and we recommend
early booking for what will be a very popular
performance.
