Fantasticus, baroque ensemble
Bedford Music Club
Fantasticus, a renowned Amsterdam-based baroque grup, returns after giving us a superb evening in 2014-15 to perform its programme 'Moravian Mystery and English Fantasy'. The mysterious instrumental music from 17th-century middle-Europe is remarkable for its abstraction, free-form and quasi-improvisatory virtuoso flourishes. Nothing epitomizes the 'stylus fantasticus' more than the Rosary (or mystery) Sonatas by Heinrich Biber.
Programme:
Heinrich von Biber (1644 -1704): Rosary Sonata – The Annunciation for violin and basso continuo (from the Mystery Sonatas); Sonata 3 for violin and basso continuo in F major (1681)
Georg Muffat (1653-1704) Ciaccona in G major for keyboard solo
Johann Heinrich Schmelzer (c. 1620-1623-1680): Sonata Quarta for violin and basso continuo
Gottfried Finger (c.1655-6-1730): Sonata no. 3 in A major for viola da gamba and bass
John Jenkins (1592-1678): ‘Fantasia Suite’ in G minor for treble, bass and basso continuo; ‘Fantasia’ in D minor for treble, bass viol and bass
Henry Purcell (1659-95): Trio Sonata for violin, bass viol and bass in G minor, Z.780
