Carl Raven (saxophone)

Berwick Music Society

Carl Raven is a saxophonist, improvisor and educator. He performs regularly with the Halle, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, RLPO, RPO, Manchester Camerata, Opera North, Northern Sinfonia. Carl’s current projects involve electronics, electronic sensors on the saxophone and MaxMSP programming.

Carl’s programme will demonstrate why the  saxophone is perhaps the most multifaceted of all solo instruments. The urbane charm of Philip Glass’s Melodies reminds us that this quintessential New Yorker once studied in Paris, while the jazzy breaks of Terry Riley’s Dorian Reeds also evoke music from India. In between come three pieces by Giacinto Scelsi that sound like a mythical folk-music – part Celtic, part Corsican, music by Anna Appleby that reaches back to the beginnings of Planet Earth, and a virtuoso showpiece by Christopher Fox.
