Not-for-profit organisations: Which bank account should we use?

When it comes to choosing the best bank account for your not-for-profit organisation the prospect may seem a little daunting. Questions – 'which bank should we use?' 'what does each account offer?' 'what is the best Account for our group?' – can all make the process seem overwhelming. But don’t fret! This guidance outlines some of the different bank accounts that are available and aims to help you decide on the most suitable options for your group.

With finding venues, members and music you have plenty on your plate without creating more paperwork and admin - and to be honest an informal, flexible approach can be useful when you are getting things off the ground. But as groups grow and become more stable it is a good idea to start thinking about a formal structure for your group.

Getting your prices right: what to think about and why

Putting a price on a loaf of bread, a new pair of shoes, or train ticket is something that everyone is used to doing. We expect prices to be associated with these things; we can compare one loaf of bread to another, understand the value of a pair of trainers compared to a pair of flip-flops, or take a train at a different time. Pricing of less material things, like the experience of being in or going to see a music group, can be trickier to navigate.

Case study: How creative thinking led a new group to success

Members of Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra (APO) explain how a group created to cater for people unable to commit to weekly rehearsals has grown into a flourishing hub of innovation.

Background

The Aldworth Philharmonic is a project-based orchestra in Reading, Berkshire. By that, we mean that we only rehearse shortly before each event we put on, rather than holding regular weekly rehearsals. A typical rehearsal schedule for us is made up of 4 of 5 rehearsal days mainly over the weekends immediately leading before a performance.
