Our very dear Berkeley Ranby was awarded the President's Award at Glasgow's 2011 AGM, following on from his final retirement from active participation as a Making Music volunteer. Making Music's Vice Chair, Linda Young, recalls something of Berkeley's history with the organisation:
Berkeley joined the North West Committee in 1985 and retired in June of this year. During that time he was involved in the establishment of NW Classical Music Tours which facilitated artists’ tours for the promoting groups in the NW region, and in seeking funding to continue the activity. He also played a major role in the setting up of the original NW regional website and then its redesign, for integration with the new national site.
At national level, Berkeley was involved with the Concert Promoters Group (CPG) and the production of the Concert Promoters' Network brochure for 15 years, including 6 years as Chair. He also edited the promoters’ Newsletter and was heavily involved in the establishment of the Concert Promoters’ website. He retired from the CPG in July of this year.
Berkeley joined the Board in 1995 and retired at the 2005 AGM, only to find himself co-opted for a further part-year to fill a vacancy left by illness. During his directorship he was involved with many subcommittees and working groups including Resources, Finance, Internal Support, Equal Opportunities and, in particular, Governance, where he spearheaded a comprehensive review of the organisation’s policies and procedures. He also acted as First-call Director to a number of Regional Committees, where his thoughtful input and support for the volunteers was greatly appreciated.
In every aspect of his involvement, his attention to detail was legendary and the final version of many a document bears the mark of his keen eye as a proof- reader and spotter of glaring omissions. Both staff and fellow directors have been grateful for his advice, always given willingly and in his characteristically unassuming way. You knew if he thought you’d made a mistake about something - he never said as much directly but delivered the phrase 'Are you sure?' with that slightly quizzical look that told you to think again.
Berkeley is a truly worthy recipient of this award, and, as quoted by one of his nominators, 'is an outstanding example to all who would aspire to become volunteers in the promotion and practice of live music making'.
