The competition embodies St Martin’s commitment to the discovery, nurture and promotion of new and emerging musical talent and continues a long history of musical excellence and artistic contribution at the heart of London.
With the support of Making Music, the competition is able to offer winners the opportunity to establish and develop a performance profile throughout the UK. Through our collaboration, Making Music member groups can book the winning ensemble for an exclusive fee under our discounted artist scheme.
2017 winner: Zelkova Quartet
The Zelkova quartet was formed in Manchester in 2010 and has been playing in its current formation since 2016. All the members are former students at the Royal Northern College of Music.
The groups’ work revolves around the incredibly rich and diverse quartet repertoire, aiming to capture the revolutionary spirit of its most important messengers, from Haydn’s early development of the form to the latest contemporary works.
The quartet has commissioned and performed work from both well-established and emerging composers. Recently the quartet was awarded the main prize at the 2017 St Martin in the Fields Chamber Music Competition.
"Watch out for Zelkova Quartet who played Brahms with head, heart, muscle and a rare unity of purpose and had me twitching in my seat." - Andrew Mellor (Gramophone, Opera, New Statesman)
