About the event:
To fully include everyone in our music activities, we need to understand the barriers that stop them from attending, taking part or progressing. As part of our focus on access and inclusion, we are hosting a series of events to explore what the barriers are to taking part in music activity and what action we can take to remove them. Hear about the issues from the perspective of those who directly experience them and discuss what we can do to change this within our own music groups.
In this informal conversation event with Paul Whittaker, he‘ll talk about his experiences as a profoundly deaf musician. We’ll talk about the barriers people who are deaf or who have hearing loss experience to making music and what solutions and support groups can offer.
Paul Whittaker has been Deaf from birth. After getting a Music degree from Wadham College, Oxford and a Post-graduate diploma from the Royal Northern College of Music he founded a charity to encourage Deaf people to make music. For 30 years he has been signing musicals, operas and concerts and in 2010 he gave the first signed BBC Prom. He runs 4 signing choirs and in 2017 set up SiBSL - Songs in British Sign Language - a website dedicated to raising standards and awareness of the art form.
This event will provide an informal and safe space to discuss challenging issues. We want to encourage you to take part in the discussion, and we welcome your questions and contributions. The conversation will be facilitated by Making Music staff.
We’ll talk about:
- Paul’s experience of making music and music environments as a Deaf musician
- The barriers to music making experienced by people who are Deaf or have hearing loss
- What actions the music community can take to become truly representative and diverse
- The actions we can take in our own music environment
There will be an opportunity to ask questions via the chat function during the event.
