About the event:
To fully include everyone in our music activities, we need to understand the barriers that stop people from attending, taking part or progressing. In the Conversation about inclusion series of events, hear about the issues from the perspective of those who directly experience barriers and discuss what we can do to change things from within our own music groups.
What are the things in music environments that discourage or even exclude LGBTQ+ people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer queer/questioning + other queer identities)? For this informal conversation event, we’ll have two speakers with a wealth of experience in creating safe and encouraging music activities that address this challenge. We’ll talk about the barriers people might experience because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and what solutions and support music groups can offer.
- Dr Kathleen Cronie is a conductor and researcher, currently MD of Loud & Proud, Scotland’s first LGBT+ choir. Kathleen’s research focuses on the role of a choral conductor; her PhD research investigated singers’ expectations of their conductors and developed a model for designing and running rehearsals and concerts which prioritise singers' needs. She also works as the Research Officer for LGBT Youth Scotland and recently led the Life in Scotland for LGBT Young People research.
- Dr Michael Bonshor is a music psychologist with a background as a professional singer, voice teacher and conductor. He is the Course Director for the University of Sheffield’s MA Music Psychology in Education, Performance and Wellbeing. He has experience of teaching individual transgender singers, and leading voice workshops to help trans people to use their voices in a way which reflects their gender identity.
This event will provide an informal and safe space to discuss challenging issues. We want to encourage you to take part in the discussion, and we welcome your questions and contributions. The conversation will be facilitated by Making Music staff.
We’ll talk about:

- The actions we can take in our own music environments
