Haydn and Mahler in Ely Cathedral - postponed

We are sorry to announce that this concert has been postponed until later in the summer or 2021.

Rising British cello star, Joshua Lynch, joins Ely Sinfonia to play Haydn's witty and lyrical Cello Concerto No 2 at the centrepiece of a concert of popular classics that also includes some fabulous works by Mahler and Berlioz. Cambridge-based Joshua Lynch is a prolific soist, chamber musician and teacher. He has performed in some of the UK's most prestigious venues, such as The Wigmore Hall, The Crucible and the Leeds International Concert Series. He is a past winner of the Maurice Ravel International Academy of Music award (Musiciens entre guerre et paix).

Arguably the best work for cello and orchestra coming out of the nineteenth century, Haydn’s Cello Concerto No 2 is something of an enigma. There was some doubt over its authenticity for a while, but in fact, while apparently more relaxed and easy-going than the Cello Concerto no 1, it is technically much more difficult, demanding virtuoso playing from the soloist. It is been recorded by some of the world's best-known cello players, such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Steven Isserlis and Jacqueline Du Pre.

Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, starting the concert, would not have been written but for the failure of his opera, Benvenuto Cellini, now considered a masterpiece. Yet it is now one of his most popular works.

The concert concludes with Mahler’s highly ambitious and totally spell-binding Symphony no 1, which owes much of its excitement and drama to Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, on which it was modelled.
