Summer Concert

The orchestra will perform Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor with talented Romanian-born pianist George Todica, a prize-winning graduate of the Rpyal College of Music and the Royal conservatoire of Scotland. He has played locally as part of the Bosendorfer concert series in 2020 and 2021 at Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre and performed the Grieg piano Concerto in Cambridge in 2019.
This was the only concerto Grieg completed and is among the most popular of all piano concerti. He composed it at age 24 and revised it at least seven times, with this final version completed just a few weeks before his death in 1907.
Morecambe and Wise with Andre Previn used this concerto in a memorable comedy sketch!

Both Choir and Orchestra will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony-Cantata ‘Hymn of Praise’ (Lobgesang) composed and first performed in 1840. When it was first performed in England at the Birmingham Triennial Festival that same year it was greeted with critical acclaim and Mendelssohn’s setting of the hymn ‘Nun danket’ received a standing ovation from the audience - something that had not happened since the Hallelujah Chorus in Handel’s Messiah.
