Performance of 'Petite Messe Solennelle' by Gioachino Rossini

If you think you know what to expect from a Latin Mass, you will be surprised by this piece. Best known as the composer of The Barber of Seville, Rossini imbued his Petite Messe Solenelle with all the drama of one of his operas. Written at the end of his life, there is a mischievous sense of irony about the music, as if he no longer cared about convention; he certainly had a bit of fun with the title, as the work is neither small in scale nor solemn, but theatrical and joyous.

Our soloists for the evening, well known and popular locally and farther afield, are soprano Catherine Hamilton, alto Helen Haviland, tenor Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks and bass Darren Jeffery. The singers will be accompanied on the cathedral organ by Nick Danks, and on two pianos by Paul Foster and Jenny Shepley, with Plymouth Philharmonic's conductor Christopher Fletcher at the helm.
