South London Jazz Orchestra 2023 Composition Competition

The South London Jazz Orchestra (SLJO) are holding a composition competition, inviting aspiring jazz composers to write a new score for big band on the theme of 'London's diverse musical history'. A winning composer will receive a prize of £750, along with two runners up who will each win a prize of £250. These 3 scores will be played by SLJO at a charity concert in summer 2023 dedicated to raising money for South London students who don't have access to musical instruments. Even if you are not one of the finalists, all entries will still receive feedback from industry professionals and advice on how they might get their work performed in future.

  • Score duration: 4-8 minutes, including any proposed improvisation sections.
  • Difficulty level: Should be playable by accomplished amateur performers.
  • Genre: All musical aesthetics from all jazz and fusion worlds.
  • Arrangement: Big band, but SLJO can accommodate many deviations from the norm (see accompanying PDF).
