Position: Chorus Manager
Thames Opera Company (TOC), is an independent arts organisation based in Southeast Essex. TOC is a registered charity for the promotion of the arts for the benefit of the public, through the presentation of opera and other dramatic arts.
At the heart of the company is its chorus. Made up of around 80, non-auditioned members of mixed musical ability, it is an inclusive and friendly group with a real sense of community and family.
This role will be to act as a manager for the chorus of the Thames Opera Company. The person will be working on a monthly invoiced freelance basis, on a rolling 12-month contract. The work is currently projected to amount to an average of 2 days a week, though this can vary (especially around performance times).
Hours can be worked flexibly at a time that suits the candidate with some mandatory presence/requirements at rehearsals, performances and meetings.
We are seeking a person with arts management experience, especially in the field of musical arts.
Applications from an experienced administrator with an interest in arts/community/production but without experience in that field may also be considered.
Roles and responsibilities:
- The role will report into the Board of Trustees.
- You will need to liaise with the Artistic and Musical Directors
- You will be required to attend at least one rehearsal per month (currently held on Monday evenings in Upminster between 7.15-9.30pm,
- Scheduling and attending management meetings with the Board and Artistic Team (face to face or online).
- You will be responsible for day-to-day management of the chorus. These will include some pastoral duties, collating and responding to feedback from members, and making the Board aware of any issues.
- You will maintain and manage membership records, ensuring they are kept accurately and up to date
- You will be responsible for managing communications to the chorus, including schedules of rehearsals and performances via the email marketing platform.
- You will support with marketing activity to promote the chorus and in the recruitment of new members
- You will maintain the website, working with the web volunteer to ensure that news stories, and web pages are kept up to date.
- Maintain and increase TOC’s social media presence.
- You will also be required to support the Producer in the lead up and during TOC events and performances assisting with concert management and production
- Community outreach duties including liaison with other groups
- You will be required to perform some administrative and logistical duties.
Other duties and tasks:
- Other such duties that may be required from time to time by the Directors and Trustees.
Person Specification
The candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills:
Essential
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal
- Great at building relationships with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds and with a range of needs.
- Good negotiating and influencing skills
- Resilient and flexible with the ability to work under pressure and to agreed deadlines
- Strong user of of MS365 including Teams, Sharepoint, Outlook, Word, Excel
- Organised and able to prioritise multiple tasks
- Self-reliant and able to sometimes work alone
- Happy to work occasional evenings and weekends
Desirable
- Knowledge of email marketing platforms, ideally Mailchimp
- Use of Canva or similar design package would be advantageous
- Knowledge of writing web copy and updating web pages, preferably WIX.
- Experience of digital marketing
- Has an Arts/Music background
- Has previous experience of working with community groups
