When I was trying to justify my existence as a music student I often suffered from crises of confidence. In talking to colleagues years later it is some comfort to learn that I wasn’t alone in thinking that everyone else was far more talented and that sooner or later I would be, ‘found out’.

Apparently we all, (apart from a very few confidence-ridden individuals) have thoughts about not really belonging where we find ourselves.

We're thrilled to announce that two composers from our Adopt a Composer project have been nominated for the 2018 British Composer Awards.

Robert Laidlow, involved in the current year's Adopt a Composer, has been nominated as one of three finalists in the 'Small Chamber' category for his piece 'Lines Between'.

Making music as a hobby has a long tradition in the UK where there are an estimated 40,000 choirs and at least 20,000 instrumental groups including brass bands, amateur orchestras, sitar societies, folk groups, drumming circles, jazz bands, ukulele groups, and more, with over 3.3 million individuals involved.

Every community has such groups that bring people from all walks of life together to practise and perform music in their leisure-time on a regular basis.
