Getting people to step into committee or other organising roles is a real challenge for many groups. At this event we’ll be exploring the drivers that make people want to volunteer as well as what puts people off, and supporting you to create strategies that will get enthusiastic and useful new recruits involved.
98% of Making Music member groups are run by a committee of volunteers and their time, work and commitment are the most valuable resource a group has. But at a time when volunteering numbers are generally falling, how does your group keep attracting people into those key roles? It’s risky to leave it to luck, or to wait until a role is suddenly vacated, before you plan how to fill it. At this event, we’ll help you to consider some actions to take today so those vital volunteers will keep stepping up.
We’ll be exploring some research on volunteering to understand what makes people want to volunteer, and some of the things that put them off, or stop them even if they are keen. We’ll consider how you can remove some of the barriers to volunteering people encounter by re-thinking how you define roles and assign tasks. And we’ll look at how you can use drivers to create a positive and enjoyable volunteering experience, so helping out doesn’t feel like a chore.
Of course, committee volunteers need to be responsible and skilled, especially if they are charity Trustees, so we’ll explore how to write role descriptions that help people understand and meet their responsibilities without scaring them off. With breakout rooms of members of groups who operate just like yours to talk to, and guidance from our team experienced in supporting committees, you can get started on re-thinking volunteer recruitment that gets results.
We'll talk about:
- Understanding volunteers – research on who volunteers and why
- What are the challenges? What puts people off or stops them?
- Roles that work – assigning tasks and writing role descriptions
- Using drivers to ‘sell’ and recruit
- Creating a positive experience and saying thank you
