The House of Commons’ Culture, Media and Sport select committee are surveying the audiences of live music events across the UK – and we want your voices to be heard. Join this event to share your experience of attending music events, to inform the inquiry and contribute to its recommendations to government on what they can do to support the whole live music ecology.
A fan-led review of live music has been launched by Westminster MPs, with the aim of improving the sustainability of grassroots live music. Led by Lord Brennan of Canton, the review aims to bring music lovers together to discuss ideas to protect the industry and ensure it works in the best interests of fans and attenders. It responds to a previous committee report which amplified concerns about the financial precarity of the grassroots music sector and heard that fans are “massively underrepresented” in policymaking. They concluded that “a comprehensive review of the live music ecosystem is needed to fully explore the long-term challenges and the interventions needed to protect it” - and this event is part of this survey and review process.
We’re seeking your views and experiences of concerts you attend; concerts in your community by the leisure time music groups that make up the Making Music membership, but also any concerts, whatever genre of music or venue they are in, and no matter how big or small. We'll be using a process created by the Parliament’s Public Engagement team called Distributed Dialogue. After the event, we’ll report the conversation to the committee to inform the inquiry, and get your views directly in front of MPs.
As context for our conversation, we’ll hear from speakers with insights into grassroots events and venues from running venues and festivals, about the challenges they are experiencing in this currently difficult environment.
So if you are a regular attender of live music events, please come and share your views with us. This is a unique opportunity to speak directly to a committee who want to be guided by the many fans of music across the country to ensure live music flourishes.
We'll talk about:
- What kind of live music events you go to and why
- Your experiences of attending live music events and your views about music venues
- What could be done to improve yuor experiences atteneding live music events in the UK
- Anything else the Review should consider about live music events from a fan's perspective
There will be an opportunity to ask questions during the event.
