First sentence/ quick summary

About the event:

To fully include everyone in our music activities, we need to understand the barriers that stop them from attending, taking part or progressing. As part of our focus on access and inclusion, we are hosting a series of events to explore what the barriers are to taking part in music activity and what action we can take to remove them. These ‘Conversations about Inclusion’ events are a chance to about hear about the issues from the perspective of those who have directly experience them and discuss what we can do to change this within our own music groups.

In this informal conversation event with Roger Wilson from Black Lives in Music, we‘ll talk about what the barriers are for Black musicians and how we can address them.

Black Lives in Music campaign for equity and a truly inclusive and diverse music industry. In 2021 they surveyed nearly 2,000 Black music creators and industry professionals and the published report has produced key information and an insight into their experience. Roger will talk about the findings and what they tell us about the action that is needed to make change. Read about Black Lives in Music and download the report

This event will provide an informal and safe space to discuss challenging issues. We want to encourage you to take part in the discussion, and we welcome your questions and contributions. The conversation will be facilitated by Making Music staff.

We’ll talk about:
•    The Black Lives in Music report on Being Black in the Music Industry
•    The barriers to taking part in music activity experienced by Black people
•    What actions the music community can take to become truly representative and diverse
•    The actions we can take in our own music environments

There will be an opportunity to ask questions via the chat function during the event.
