Summer Serenade

CONCERT 8 JULY 2017: A SUMMER SERENADE

The final concert in this 150th anniversary year for Cockermouth Harmonic Society is a programme of British music.  Three tuneful collections of songs will enchant and relax on a summer evening.

Songs From The Bavarian Highlands  by Edward Elgar are songs based on Bavarian folk tunes arranged by the favourite composer of the early twentieth century.  Slightly less well-known are Songs Of the Fleet by Charles Villiers Stanford, accompanied by some dramatically descriptive music.

The third piece for choir and soloist is the world premiere of Philip Wood’s Five Shakespeare Songs.  Written specially for Cockermouth Harmonic Society’s 150th anniversary, we are looking forward to surprising and delighting our audience with these contrasting and beautiful settings of words from Shakespeare.

The soloist is bass-baritone Jolyon Dodgson, and Ian Thompson will conduct the choir, accompanied by Nicholas Butters.

The concert will take place on 8 July at 7.30pm in All Saints Church, Kirkgate, Cockermouth.

Tickets for the concert will cost £12, but are free for full-time students, and there is a discount for parties of 6 or more.  Tickets are available from Billy Bowman’s music shop in Cockermouth.  Or contact Janet Johnston (telephone 01900 825083 or email: ticketsales@cockermouthharmonic.org.uk) for further information.

Note to Editors: Cockermouth Harmonic Society is the largest adult choir in Cockermouth with some 60 singing members.  The choir performs the major choral repertoire and has a professional musical director and accompanist.

Cockermouth Harmonic Society prepares for at least two major concerts a year.
