Durham Choral Society and Orchestra present a programme of music that evokes night-time from Dusk ‘til Dawn.
Mozart’s ever-popular Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Schubert’s Mass No 2 in G take us through the evening, and the world then re-awakens with The Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjeilo. The music also takes us through the centuries and contrasting styles.
In the classical style is Eine Kleine Nacht Musik, which was composed in 1787 but not published until 1837. Schubert also worked in the classical style and, along with Beethoven, heralded romanticism. He composed his Mass in G in 1815, but it was not printed until 1845 and he developed the work after that date. The grander work with full orchestra was discovered in the 1980s. The Sunrise Mass is a much more modern piece, partly influenced by film scores, and was first performed in 2008.
