Hertfordshire Chorus and Newcastle Choral Society are delighted to bring you this combined concert, featuring one of the great choral works by Vaughan Williams and the northern premiere of the critically acclaimed Codebreaker, written by James McCarthy, one of our most talented contemporary composers.

A Sea Symphony

After a short brass fanfare, the choir declares “Behold, the sea itself!”. So begins A Sea Symphony, which conjures a vision of panoramic horizons and brave voyages, using atmospheric poetry by Walt Whitman.
Our combined choirs will bring the drama and poignancy of one of our favourite choral pieces to this performance.
David Temple will conduct.

Codebreaker

For Codebreaker, our choirs will be under the baton of Mark Anyan, conductor of Newcastle Choral Society. Commissioned by Hertfordshire Chorus in 2012, the music is dramatic, emotional and memorable.
Codebreaker charts the life of Alan Turing, famous for breaking the German Enigma code during World War Two which possibly shortened the war by two years.
