Britten St Nicolas
Britten’s popular cantata was composed in 1948 for the centenary of Lancing College. In it, no mention is made of Christmas, reindeer, chimneys or sleighs. Instead, we attend Nicolas’s birth and bath time, witness his consecration as Bishop, almost drown in a storm, and observe three ‘Pickled Boys’ being brought back to life, among other vivid legends and miracles associated with the famous Saint. The score is hugely imaginative – dramatic and light-hearted by turns, colourful and full of fun.
We are delighted to welcome back tenor soloist Andrew Tortise as St Nicolas, en route to the Endellion Festival in Cornwall and George Humphreys, one of the most promising young British baritones.
