SASO will play Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture, William Walton’s Cello Concerto, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Sixth Symphony.
SASO welcomes guest conductor Orlando Jopling and cellist Ben Tarlton.
Overture was composed in 1943, during the German occupation of Grażyna’s home, Poland. With its clear form consisting of short, contrasting segments, Overture packs the power of a larger symphonic work into a compact six minutes.
Walton’s Cello Concerto has been described as ‘introspective, with a ticking rhythm throughout the work suggesting the inexorable passage of time’.
First performed in 1948, Vaughan Williams’s Sixth Symphony is a large-scale complex twentieth century masterpiece of unsettling emotional content.
Doors will open at 6:50 p.m. for 7:30. There will be a 20-minute interval, when drinks may be purchased.
