Abney Orchestra is seeking to appoint a new Musical Director, to replace our current MD Robert Brooks, starting September 2019.

Abney Orchestra is an amateur, community orchestra, formed 16 years ago, based in Mossley Greater Manchester with 30 to 40 members of ages ranging from teens to retired. There is no audition for membership and we support all abilities. We have reduced wind and strings sections with brass and percussion together with a good sax section.  We play adaptations of popular classics and film music using small orchestral versions or wind band arrangements with slightly altered orchestration.   We aim to give up to three concerts a year. We rehearse on Friday evenings during term time from 7.15pm – 9:15pm at The Vale, Mossley, OL5 9JL.

We are a very friendly, inclusive and supportive group of musicians who wish to achieve the highest possible standards whilst enjoying making music together. We are looking for a Musical Director who will be able to develop our abilities whilst continuing to make our rehearsals inclusive and fun.  We would welcome someone who could contribute new ideas and connections to expand our profile in the local community. The orchestra is an unincorporated body and is managed by a committee elected by the members of the orchestra.

Applicants should have excellent conducting technique, the ability to engage and inspire amateur musicians of all ages and abilities, knowledge of a wide range of repertoire and above all a good sense of humour.

In return Abney Orchestra offer fees of £60 per rehearsal and £90 per concert.
