Advert and Job Description Musical Director - Bromley Œcumenical Singers (BOES)

Bromley Œcumenical Singers (BOES) is looking to appoint a new Musical Director from May 2022 to work with our well established mixed voice (SATB) choir. BOES was founded in1988 with the aim to raise money for charities through three major concerts per year.

BOES performs a wide and varied repertoire, from major choral works some with orchestra to lighter popular music and is well known for raising money for local charities. To date we have raised over £85,000.

BOES has now returned to rehearsals with a temporary conductor.  Due to the pandemic, sadly our numbers have dwindled from around 40 to 23 and the Music Director will be someone looking to develop the choir and lead in attracting new members.  We have already embarked on a poster campaign aimed at attracting new singers from local church choirs as well as the general public.

Choir members encompass a wide age range and rehearses every Monday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30 pm throughout the year (with a Summer, Christmas and Easter break). The rehearsals are held at St: Andrews Church, Burnt Ash Lane in Bromley. Concerts are performed across a number of locations in Bromley.

More recently, BOES performed Haydn's The Creation, Faure’s Requiem and Poulenc’s Gloria with international soloist who have worked at the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera and the English National Opera. In 2021 we ran a very successful Young Musician Competition and hope to do so in 2022.

The Musical Director will like a challenge, be expected to prepare, manage and attend all rehearsals and concerts. Applicants should ideally have choral conducting experience and excel at working positively and enthusiastically with mixes ability adult choirs, professional soloist, and of working with both orchestra and accompanist.

The Musical Director is expected to attend termly Committee meetings and ensure that concerts are efficiently planned and programmed in advance. It is expected that the Musical Director will work alongside the Committee, Choir and President to favourably develop the organisation and recruit new singers, whilst remaining sympathetic to the to the aims of the choir. Furthermore, they should be prepared to act as an ambassador for the choir.

The remuneration of the Musical Director is based on a sessional rehearsal rate, per session, depending on experience. Concert performances are paid at £300 which includes an additional rehearsal during the concert week and a rehearsal on the day of the concert. The musical Director position is a permanent position.
