The City of York Council Workplace Choir is open to staff, past and present, from across the City of York Council and other organisations that provide public services to the citizens of York. It brings together people from all levels and directorates through the common goals of singing, rehearsing and performing music.

The Choir was founded in 2010 as a Wellbeing Initiative and its aims are to:

  • welcome people of all levels of singing experience, without audition
  • enable members to relax, learn and have fun
  • develop new musical skills
  • perform and take part in community events around the city
  • present a positive aspect of the Council brand and promote the organisation in the city

The Choir is still part of an ongoing staff wellbeing initiative delivering a wide a range of benefits to our members, personally and in relation to work, and to the benefit of the Council. The new Musical Director will also be required to liaise with the recently appointed Health Improvement Manager, who is the direct link between the Choir and the Council.

We sing songs in a wide variety of styles and genres, including musicals, pop, classical, jazz, folk, gospel and world music. Our repertoire is selected by our Musical Director, taking into account suggestions from members, with the aim of finding material that is enjoyable to learn and which develops our musical skills.

To get the greatest benefit and the most fun from being in the choir, members attend rehearsals regularly. We aim to provide rehearsal tracks to support home learning and it is not necessary for members to be able to read music.

Our performances have been varied, including formal and informal concerts, participation in musical events involving other groups and culminating in our last major performance at York’s Annual Community Carol Concert 2017 at York Barbican.

The Choir has a committee, which is elected every year at our Annual General Meeting by our members. The responsibilities of the Musical Director include:

  • To act as leader at weekly rehearsals, periodic longer rehearsals and concerts
  • To select music, taking into account suggestions from and consultations with members
  • To prepare rehearsal tracks
