Musical Director

Application deadline:
Tuesday, 30 April 2024
Description of vacancy:

Our present MD Martin Bussey is retiring in December 2024 after five years at the helm, during which time he has challenged the choir and expanded the range of standard choral repertoire to include more contemporary works, both sacred and secular, such as music by Chilcott, Judith Weir and Rebecca Dale. The choir has also performed large-scale works such as Dvorak Stabat Mater and Haydn The Creation with guest soloists and orchestra. The choir performs four times a year as well as holding an annual ‘Come and Sing’ event and a developmental ‘Awayday’. We recently collaborated with Chester Bach Singers and Chester Philarmonic Orchestra to perform Dream of Gerontius in Chester Cathedral. It was fabulous and we received amazing feedback.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is a charismatic trained musician with a passion for choral singing who can lead and inspire us to perform a wide range of repertoire with joy and confidence.
  • Can further develop our vocal technique and ensemble
  • Has the ability to motivate through energy and humour
  • Is enthusiastic and able to challenge the choir with new ideas
  • Has good organisational skills, including planning for concerts and compiling rehearsal schedules
  • Is willing to collaborate with the committee
  • Is a good communicator, both musically and verbally

The choir rehearses on Tuesday evening from 7.30 – 9.30pm in Holy Trinity Church Oswestry and has a regular accompanist. The current MD auditions all choir applicants and we perform to a high standard with good sight-reading skills expected.
