Musical Director

Application deadline:
Thursday, 18 May 2023
Description of vacancy:

Epworth is a friendly amateur mixed non-auditioned choir of about 80 singers from Woking, Surrey. Since 1958, we have developed the reputation as one of Surrey’s leading choirs. The aim of the Choir is to raise money for local charities, whilst promoting the enjoyment of choral singing as a rewarding and uplifting activity, accessible to all.

We rehearse in Woking on Wednesday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30 with a professional accompanist. We perform a variety of music ranging from major choral works with professional soloists and orchestras, to popular music and carols at venues in Woking and surrounding areas. As well as regular rehearsals and four annual concerts, the Choir has supported local events such as the late Queen’s Jubilee and we enjoy hosting vocal workshops and ‘come and sing’ events. In September 2023 we are joining with three other local choirs to perform Verdi’s Requiem under the direction of Godalming Choral’s Musical Director, in the Theatre in the Woods, the home of Grange Park Opera. Plans for the remainder of the season includes the Haydn ‘Nelson Mass’ and Chilcott’s ‘On Christmas Night’.

The new Musical Director will play a vital role in shaping the choir’s future programme and strategy. The ideal candidate will be ambitious and energetic with a good sense of humour and a positive and motivational approach to rehearsals. They will have the skills to engage with an amateur choir of varying ability whilst developing the choir’s repertoire, musical interpretation and concert standards. Key attributes should include a wide knowledge of traditional and modern repertoire and experience working with a professional orchestra and soloists.
