Conductor / Musical Director

Application deadline:
Monday, 14 August 2023
Description of vacancy:

We are looking for a Conductor/Musical Director to start at the beginning of 2024 (or earlier by agreement), to help us build on the excellent work of our previous conductor Felicity Cliffe.

Key aspects of the role would include:

  • Rehearsing the orchestra. This would include planning the rehearsals, taking rehearsals on Wednesday evenings for 2 hours, and then a 3 hour rehearsal in the afternoon of the concert day at the venue.
  • Conducting 3-4 concerts in a season.
  • Selecting suitable repertoire for the season’s programme with assistance from the leader and the orchestra committee.
  • Assisting with finding and approaching suitable soloists and any deps that may be required for concerts.
  • Helping the orchestra grow and develop both in musical performance and in knowledge of repertoire.

Remuneration

  • The orchestra will pay a fee to be agreed for Wednesday evening rehearsals and the concert days
  • The level of remuneration will be reviewed and agreed on an annual basis for each season. Any extra concerts and rehearsals or other administrative duties  will be paid pro rata.

Additional information about the orchestra, including repertoire previously performed and excerpts from previous concerts, can be found on our website (www.hayessymphony.org.uk) and social media. We aim to attract applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds and we encourage applications from groups who are under-represented in the classical music industry.

HSO aims to provide an environment where members feel included, supported, encouraged and respected. Our Musical Director is expected to uphold these values to give members the best possible experience as part of HSO.

Application is by CV with a covering letter which will be treated in the strictest confidence. Send applications to chairman@hayessymphony.org.uk by 15th August. Selected applicants will be offered a short zoom interview shortly after with the committee and then a small number of applicants will be offered an audition date, in late September/October 2023, which will be confirmed by 1st September.
