Description of vacancy: 

We are looking for a candidate who can commit to the following minimum requirements:

  • Conducting at least one concert per year

  • For each concert they are conducting, taking all rehearsals in the week of the concert (Wednesday and Friday evenings and one on the afternoon of the concert) plus at least one other during the rehearsal period for that concert

  • Working in collaboration with the Artistic Planning Group to support the artistic direction of the society

  • Working in collaboration with the Artistic Planning Group to select soloists for concerts

  • Taking part in publicity to promote the Society and Orchestra

  • Maintaining the ethos of the Society

Other duties of the Musical Director may include:

  • Attending and reporting to meetings of the Executive Committee where requested plus attendance at / report to the Society’s AGM

  • Working with the Rehearsal Conductor to prepare the Orchestra for concerts.

  • Pre-concert talks by agreement

  • Working closely with Orchestral Manager and Librarians to ensure concert management / staging / music hire and other matters arising are managed appropriately

  • Contributing to Newsletter / Concert programmes

  • Assisting with fundraising and sponsorship opportunities

The number of rehearsals and concerts conducted per season will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Rehearsal Conductor

We are also seeking a rehearsal conductor, who will work closely with the Musical Director, to take those rehearsals which do not fall under the Musical Director’s responsibilities. These will run throughout the concert season, commencing in early September and ending with the final season’s concert in mid-May.

This search will be fully advertised after the shortlisting process for the post of Musical Director.

Applicants for the role of Musical Director who may also be interested in serving as Rehearsal Conductor should make the Administrator aware in their application.

N.B: Offering both roles will not give any applicant an advantage or disadvantage in the recruitment process for the role of Musical Director, and we stress that potential applicants should not be discouraged from applying if they cannot commit to both roles.

The Recruitment Process:

The longlisting process will take place in January 2022 and the shortlisting process over the 2022-2023 seasons (please see ‘How to Apply’ for further details).

It is hoped that the successful candidate will be appointed for a minimum term of three seasons, which shall include a probationary period of one season.

Remuneration

This is a paid position. Information on current remuneration is available on application and may be open to negotiation.

  • A cover letter (no more than one side of A4);

  • A CV including details of your orchestral conducting experience (no more than two sides of A4);

  • A link to an audiovisual recording of your conducting, with you as the focus of the film (please check permissions on the video wherever it is hosted to ensure shortlisting panel members will be able to view it);

  • Programming suggestions for a three-concert season for Hull Philharmonic Orchestra, with an accompanying explanation of your decisions;

  • References (2 musical, one personal).

All candidates are invited to attend the first Hull Philharmonic Orchestra concert of our 21/22 season at Hull City Hall on Saturday 27 November. Please contact admin@hullphilharmonic.org to request a complimentary ticket. Applicants who are not able to attend the concert will not be disadvantaged in the recruitment process.

Longlisted applicants will be invited to a Zoom interview with a panel appointed by the Executive Committee. We hope to complete the longlisting process by mid-January 2022, and to complete the shortlisting process by mid-February 2022.

The shortlist of three candidates will be invited to conduct one concert each in the 2022-2023 season, for which they will be remunerated. These three candidates will also be required to attend at least one of the remaining concerts in the current season, which will take place on February 26 and May 14 2022 - tickets and reasonable travel expenses will be provided.
